にらみあう【にらみ合う】

1 〔互いににらむ〕 glare at each other; stare fiercely [look daggers] at each other.

●二力士は土俵中央でにらみあった. The two wrestlers glared at each other in the middle of the ring.

2 〔対立して向かい合う〕 confront [face] each other; be at daggers drawn (with each other).

●両国の警備隊は国境線をはさんですでに 2 週間にらみ合っている. Defense forces of both countries have already been facing each other over the border for two weeks.

・いつまでもにらみ合っていないで妥協策を考えたらどうだ. Rather than forever confronting each other, why not work out a compromise.
